Time to celebrate, Kansas City. Our own past-president, Amanda Fischer-Penner, CMP, recently became certified as a Communication Management Professional.

This certification is granted by the Global Communication Certification Council – an autonomous governing body created by IABC. The program is ISO compliant and accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board, which means it’s aligned with other international standards for professional certification.

Amanda says she’s always working to take herself to the next level in professional development, so she’s had her eye on this goal for a while. She got serious about it earlier this year, when she finally had time to study. And study she did – about two to three hours a week for four months before the exam. The program handbook, a communications textbook, and resources on iabc.com provided most of the material. The cost of the exam can be daunting: $500 for members and $800 for non-members. But Amanda was able to get a scholarship from IABC.

Amanda is one of only two Kansas City chapter members to achieve certification. Jody Donohue was one of the first 50 people in the world to get her Strategic Communication Management Professional certification in 2018.

Membership Chair Jarial Franklin proctored the exam in Kansas City, and she and Amanda are hoping to host the exam here again next fall. Amanda’s advice: “My only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner. Don’t put it off. You can do it!”
