Overview: At Burns & McDonnell, we don’t just create content — we lead conversations that move the AEC industry forward. We’re looking for a highly versatile writer/editor who can turn complex technical ideas into compelling, high-impact stories across multi-channel formats. This role is central to developing and executing our signature brand content — from thought leadership and quarterly reports to podcasts, video and digital storytelling. You’ll help position Burns & McDonnell as the thought leader in the industry — not just by writing, but by shaping narratives, elevating ideas and leading key content programs.
Responsibilities: Write and edit high-quality content across a wide range of formats, including thought leadership articles, technical papers, reports, podcasts, news releases, video scripts, social media and digital content.
Translate complex technical concepts into clear, engaging and audience-focused narratives.
Collaborate with marketing team members, business leaders and subject matter experts to develop and execute content aligned with strategic priorities.
Contribute to and help shape thought leadership strategy and storytelling direction.
Lead key content programs and strategic storytelling efforts — guiding work from concept through execution, including narrative development, stakeholder alignment and delivery.
Generate original story ideas that elevate Burns & McDonnell’s voice in the AEC industry.
Review for accuracy, clarity and consistency across all content, aligned with AP Style and brand guidelines.
Leverage AI tools to enhance efficiency and creativity while maintaining responsibility for factchecking and source validation.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Stay current on content trends, formats and best practices.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field. 4 years of professional writing/editing experience. Exceptional writing and editing skills across technical, long-form, short-form and multimedia formats preferred. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and adhere to schedules and meet key deadlines. Proven ability to translate complex topics into engaging content preferred. Experience developing thought leadership content preferred. Extensive knowledge of AP Style, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Demonstrated skill and aptitude for accurate proofreading. Proficiency using AI tools for content creation with strong judgment in verifying outputs preferred. Experience with HubSpot, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, and video/content editing tools preferred. Strong collaboration and communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
