I am grateful to have attended the Southern Region Conference in Houston last month. In addition to the excellent sessions providing great communications development, I participated in the Leader’s Summit where we discussed challenges and solutions as chapter leaders. We also had time to learn about a few things going on at the International level I felt were worth sharing.

For instance, did you know IABC has a foundation? It was established in 1982 to generate resources to fund and support strategic initiatives in line with IABC’s purpose. Today the foundation focuses on offering members an opportunity to connect, financially support and get involved with a cause they care about.

It does this through the gifts of:

  • Communication
  • Experience
  • Excellence
  • Insights

Learn more and consider making a tax-deductible donation to the foundation to help keep the communications profession moving forward.

Another item I wanted to highlight is the Strategic Communication Management Professional certification that is now available. This certification is aimed at those in a senior level role with 8–11 years of communications experience. There is also a Communication Management Professional certification available for the generalist/specialist level, those with six to eight years of communications experience.

The certification program follows the Global Standard of six essential guiding principles for the communication profession developed by IABC. Obtaining one of these certifications gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise. Find out more at the Global Communication Certification Council. If you are interested in pursuing your certification and providing evidence of your outstanding abilities, let me know and I will explore hosting an exam in Kansas City.

Enjoy your Indian Summer and consider giving back to the profession by attending our Gift of Communications event Nov. 16.
